Joining is the formation of a tectonic system: a lattice, skeleton, or frame erected through the assembly of members and their connections. It represents one of the least materially intensive but most structurally demanding procedures in the formation of building. The stability and durability of the lattice is entirely dependent on the capacities and vulnerabilities of the parts of which it is comprised, relying on various means of creating stiffness and rigidity within a relatively light, fast, and materially minimal system of construction: shear panels, diaphragms, and sheathing; rigid joints and moment connections; diagonal bracing; fasteners.
